Painter, designer and teacher, born in Leeds where he studied at the School of Art, 1911–14, and Royal Academy Schools, 1914–15. Became headmaster of Chelsea School of Art, 1930–58, where he employed among his teachers Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, Ceri Richards and Claude Rogers; students during his time including Prunella Clough, Elisabeth Frink and Patrick Caulfield. Designed posters for General Post Office and London Underground and showed at RA, LG, NEAC and elsewhere. Imperial War Museum and others hold his work, which was sympathetic to traditional values while being in tune with Modernism. Died in Norwich, Norfolk.
