Sculptor, maker of objects and teacher, born in Denbigh, north Wales. She abandoned an early intention to become a musician, instead studying at Wrexham Technical College, 1971–2; graduated from Manchester Polytechnic, 1972–5; then did a postgraduate year at Goldsmiths’ College, 1975–6. For many years she taught in a secondary school while practising as an artist, dividing her time between Sheffield, Yorkshire, and north Wales. Williams used a wide variety of found objects to create wall- and floor-mounted works. Her Welsh heritage and femininity were both important to the creation of subtle and allusive pieces. Group exhibitions included Northern Young Contemporaries at Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, 1975; Sculpture by Women, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, 1983; Off the Shelf, Rochdale Art Gallery, 1986; New North, Tate Gallery in Liverpool and tour, 1990; and Intimate Portraits, Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea, 1955.
