Painter and teacher, born in Coventry, Warwickshire, who studied at the North Warwickshire College of Art in the 1970s, then graduated with honours in visual art from University College Wales, Aberystwyth, 1978–81; and gained his master’s there, with a thesis on the Danish nineteenth-century painter Christen Kobke, also studying the conservation of wall paintings at the Courtauld Institute of Art, both 1982–4. Whitehead remained at University College Wales as a studio assistant and was artist-in-residence at the local Ceredigion Museum, 1984. He joined the Welsh Group in 1985. Whitehead exhibited at the RBSA, RP, Hunting Art Prizes, Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow, and Thompson’s Gallery. Was twice awarded first prize at Welsh Open Art Exhibition and was a MAFA prize winner in 2002.
