Painter in oil of landscape, still life and portraits, and teacher, born in London. He studied at Ipswich and Norwich Schools of Art and London University and lectured part-time in portraiture at Kensington & Chelsea College. Whatley took part in many group shows from 1983, including Mall Galleries, ICA and Royal Miles Gallery, with solo shows from 1988 latterly including Olympia and Royal National Theatre. From 1992, Whatley celebrated London’s architectural landmarks in their anniversary years with on-location paintings, including the Tate Gallery for its 1997 centenary. His many notable portrait sitters included the thespians Honor Blackman, Judi Dench, Alec McCowen, Ian McKellen and Barbara Windsor; politicians Tony Benn and Barbara Castle; and barrister Michael Mansfield.
