Painter and draughtsman, who was said to have lived “close to the interface between genius and mental illness” – she was diagnosed by a psychiatrist as suffering from chronic schizophrenia – and whose intense, exact output, notably still lifes of dolls, was concentrated into her early twenties. She was born in a military hospital in Graz, Austria, only daughter of Major-General Ronald “Tiger” Urquhart. She attended Elmhurst Ballet School in Camberley before leaving home to board at Sherborne School for Girls, where she was considered clever, sociable and artistic. Suffered from anorexia nervosa, her health deteriorating so that she was admitted to a London mental hospital for drug treatment and was unable to complete formal education.
