Painter, notably of nudes and figure studies, and teacher, born in Sydney, Australia. In 1941 he joined the Australian Army, serving in New Guinea, and while in the Army and at Melbourne Technical College, 1945–6, on discharge studied with William Dobell. Had his first solo show in Melbourne, 1947, with subsequent exhibitions at Sydney and Hobart, then moved to Europe in 1948, settling in London. Travelled on continent and America. Became head of postgraduate painting at Birmingham Polytechnic. Took part in many mixed shows, including LG, Arts Council, and Redfern, Leicester and Mayor Galleries. In 1958 Underhill had a retrospective sponsored by the German government in Ruhr cities, Bochum, Essen and elsewhere. Other exhibitions followed in Britain and abroad, including Annely Juda Fine Art, 1975.
