Painter and draughtsman, born in Bangladesh. The artist’s work was heavily autobiographical, drawing on childhood memories of Bangladesh or later recollections in Britain, to which he moved aged nine. Uddin had grown up with the art and crafts of his native village and began painting as a child. At school in London he was encouraged by an art teacher, but had to work for many years in a sweat shop until he could paint full-time. Appeared in group exhibitions such as Whitechapel Open from 1982; Outsiders, Prema Project in Gloucestershire, 1987; South Bank Centre’s touring The British Art Show 1990; and Obsessive Visions, England & Co, 2001. After a solo show at Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1979 others included Salvatore Ala Gallery, New York, in 1986, Horizon Gallery, 1988, and Dash Gallery, 1999.
