Artist in acrylic, watercolour and charcoal, illustrator, teacher and writer, born in Bristol. He studied architecture and art education at Bristol and Exeter, 1961–6. Taught art at Tiffin School in London, 1966–8, then was head of art at Victoria College, Jersey, where he lived at St Saviour. Tilling illustrated two books by the Cornish poet Charles Causley; wrote regularly for blues and folk magazines in Britain and America; and lectured on painting and American music at such venues as the Tate Gallery, Polytechnic of Central London and British National Blues Festival. In 1985 at RI Tilling gained the bronze medal for “the most outstanding work by a non-member”, being elected a full member later that year. In 1989 he won a major prize at Cleveland International Drawing Biennale.
