Conceptualist artist and teacher, who attended St Martin’s School of Art, 1953–7, and Royal Academy Schools, 1957–60, then was at British School at Rome, 1960–2. Thompson taught at Lancaster College of Art, 1962–5; Leicester College of Art & Design, 1965–8; St Martin’s School of Art, 1965–70; and Goldsmiths’ College, 1970–92, finally as head of department of fine art and reader in the school of humanities. Early in the 1990s Thompson moved to Antwerp, Belgium, from 1992 being head of postgraduate studies in fine art at Jan van Eyck Akademie, Maastricht, Netherlands. At Goldsmiths’, he was closely associated with the Freeze generation of artists, including Damien Hirst. Thompson organised and chaired conferences at Maastricht from 1995, topics including the architecture and ideology of the museum; theory of the image; and crisis in criticism.
