Painter, decorative and mural artist and teacher, born in Meriden, Connecticut, America. Initially educated in Sheffield, Yorkshire, he attended the College of Art there, 1902–11; the Royal College of Art where his teachers included Gerald Moira and W R Lethaby; and the Slade School of Fine Art under Fred Brown and Ambrose McEvoy. He taught at Torquay School of Art and Portsmouth College of Art before moving to Darlington, County Durham, where he settled in 1928, serving until 1953 as principal art master at the local School of Art. Swinden did church restoration in Torquay and Darlington, where the local authorities bought his work. Showed at RA, Victoria & Albert Museum and extensively in the provinces, being chairman of Teesside Art Association.
