James Seamus Stoupe was born in Belfast, Ireland on 27 October 1872 and attended Belfast School of Art from 1896 to 1900 and the Royal College of Art in London until 1902. He subsequently worked as a sculptor, lithographer and painter. In 1903 he was appointed Professor of Modelling at Belfast School of Art, a position he held until 1934.
Stoupe participated in the 5th exhibition of the Arts & Crafts Society and Guild of Art-Workers in Dublin in 1917. He also exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, the Ulster Arts Club in Belfast, and at Belfast Art Society. He was elected a member of the Royal Ulster Academy in 1894. He was President of the Ulster Arts Club in 1920-21.
His address was given as 55 Hanover Street, Belfast in 1901 and 1905; 65 Haypark Avenue, Ballynafeigh, Belfast in 1908; 25 Denmark Street, Belfast in 1911 and 82 Willow Bank Street, Watford, Belfast in 1921 and 1930. He died at 127 Cavehill Road, Belfast on 20 May 1949.
