Photo-oriented artist, a chronicler of women’s lives, born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, who gained a photography and film degree at Napier University, Edinburgh, 1992–5, then her master’s in photography at Royal College of Art, 1996–7. Everyday scenes of working-class life were common in Starkey’s work, as in the Neurotic Realism series of exhibitions launched by Saatchi Gallery in 1999. Starkey had solo shows at Maureen Paley/Interim Art in London, where she lived, from 1998; Cornerhouse, Manchester, 1999; and The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Kilmainham, 2000. The Saatchi Collection holds her work.
