Painter, born in Thundersley, Essex, the son of the artists Alan and Elizabeth Sorrell. He studied at Walthamstow School of Art, 1965–6, Kingston College of Art, 1966–9, and Royal Academy Schools, 1969–72. There he won silver and bronze medals. Was elected RWS in 1978, RBA in 1989, NEAC, 1995. Sorrell showed at RA from 1971, RWS from 1975 and RBA from 1988. Other appearances included Sorrell family shows, Hayward Gallery in the Lutyens Exhibition, 1980, and Victoria & Albert Museum, Artists in National Parks, 1988. He carried out a number of commissions, including aerial views for National Trust. Had a solo show at Agnew, 1990, and Cadogan Gallery, 1992. In 2003, when he was RWS vice-president, Sorrell was the featured artist in its Autumn Exhibition.
