Architect and artist in pen and watercolour. Smith studied architecture in London in the 1920s and became an associate of RIBA in 1927. Later worked on Shell Centre and other buildings. Smith did not promote his personal work, which had something in common with that of Paul Nash, being poetic and visionary. The terrains of Mull and Iona were early influences. Two uncompleted manuscripts, The Ravine, volumes 1 and 2, contain many of his ideas in prose and poetry. Lived for some years in Tadworth, Surrey, and in the 1950s was with the architectural practice of Easton & Robertson. Austin/Desmond Fine Art showed his work and an exhibition of his surreal drawings was held at David Holmes Contemporary Art, Peterborough, in 1993. RM, as he was known, did not exhibit during his lifetime, his painting and writings helping to exorcise his depressions.
