Painter, born in London, who studied at Canterbury College of Art, 1978–81, then under John Golding at the Royal College of Art, 1983–6. In 1986 he won a Barclays Young Artist Award, John Minton Award at the Royal College and a Taliani/Chase Foundation Scholarship to Venice; in 1987 an Artists Unlimited residency in Bielefeld, West Germany; in 1989 a Triangle Artists’ Workshop Award, New York, America; in 1990 a Delfina Studio Residency; in 1991 an Honorary Diploma, Soviet Artists’ Union; and in 1992 a Studio Exchange, Karl Hofer Gesellschaft, Berlin, Germany. Later solo exhibitions included Djanogly Art Gallery, University of Nottingham and Emma Marsaglia/Sebastien Sainsbury, ADII, both 1998, and Purdy Hicks Gallery, 2000. Smith was an artist continually prepared to experiment with technique, to avoid rigidity and to adapt to circumstances.
