British draughtsman, etcher, lithographer, and teacher, born in Manchester of German descent. He studied at the *Royal College of Art, 1899, the *Slade School, 1900–6, and the *Académie Julian, Paris, 1906. In the First World War he was an *Official War Artist. After the war he taught at Camberwell and Westminster Schools of Art, then from 1930 until his death was professor at the Slade School, where his gentle manner was a contrast to that of his frequently terrifying predecessor, *Tonks.
