Arthur Puyt was a Belgian sculptor, born in 1873. Originally from Bruges, he trained at the Académie des Beaux-arts in Brussels and then settled in Forest, a municipality in the Brussels-Capital region of Belgium. Puyt specialised in small sculptures including animals and figure groups, and also graves and memorials in the Brussels region. These were noted as for the most part variations on one for a young child of the Bellot family who was tragically killed in 1907, though the metalwork from that grave has now disappeared, and he also did three First World War memorials; see Marcel M. Celis, ‘Bruxelles Patrimonies’ in Bruxelles Urbanisme et Patrimoine, no. 11/12 (Journées du Patrimoine, Region du Bruxelles du Capitale, 2014). He was also a medallist, sometimes collaborating with other artists. Variations of inscribed signatures on his bronzes include ‘A Puyt’, ‘At. Puyt’ and ‘AP’ on smaller pieces.
