Painter and muralist, born in London, who began painting aged eight. After comprehensive school he became an office boy at 16, but emigrated to Canada in 1969, where he became a member of the Baha’i Faith, sang in clubs and toured with his band Synergy and lived with the Blackfoot Indians. Working at a kibbutz in Israel in 1971 Povey painted the first of the many murals he became noted for, Abraham and Isaac, before returning to England and from 1972–3 doing a foundation course at Eastbourne College of Art and Design. From 1974 Povey lived in north Wales, engaged on a four-year graduate teacher-training course at University of Wales while painting many shopfront murals. Povey moved to Grenada, West Indies, in 1982, selling to American collectors and returning to Britain for occasional commissions.
