Landscape painter, born in Derbyshire. He studied at Chelsea School of Art, 1968–72. Was artist-in-residence at National Gallery, 1982–3. Among his group show appearances were The Romantic Tradition in Contemporary British Painting, Murcia in Spain with Spanish and English tour, 1988; Landscape Now at Stoke-on-Trent Museum and Art Gallery, 1989; and John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, 1989–90. His solo shows included Anne Berthoud Gallery, 1985; Galeria Akumalatory 2, Poznan, Poland, 1986; Fabian Carlsson Gallery touring show Derbyshire Woods, 1988; Pomeroy Purdy Gallery (later Purdy Hicks) from 1991; and Gwavas Lake, at Tate St Ives, 2001. The Gwavas Lake series was typical of Porter’s imaginative use of his materials to portray natural forms and weather effects.
