Painter, printmaker and teacher, son of the architect George Andrew Paterson. He attended Glasgow Academy and the Glasgow School of Art where he later taught graphic art, eventually becoming deputy director. He exhibited RSA, where he gained the Guthrie award in 1946, granted for best painting by a young Scottish artist at the annual exhibition. Also showed RE of which he was a member, Society of Artist Printmakers, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and elsewhere. War Artists’ Advisory Committee bought several works by Paterson. In 1996 Ewan Mundy Fine Art, Glasgow, had an exhibition of his colour woodcuts. Paterson lived in Glasgow, then in Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire.
