Artist in a wide range of media, including collage, and teacher, born in Bristol, where she studied with Gwen Pallin, also at Reigate College of Art. She was married to George D Painter, biographer of Proust and Chateaubriand. Joan Painter taught art at Friends’ Centre, Brighton, and Dupont Arts, Hove, where she lived in Sussex. She showed at International Congress for Art in Education, aged 15, also with Reigate Society of Artists’ annual exhibitions – she was a member – from 1965; other mixed shows included South East Arts Touring Exhibition, 1974–5; Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, 1975; Alpine Gallery, 1985; and Albion Gallery, Lewes, 1990. Later solo shows included Trinity Arts Centre, Tunbridge Wells, opening exhibition, 1983, and Hove Museum and Art Gallery, 1994.
