William Dermod O’Brien [commonly known as Dermod O’Brien] was born in Mount Trenchard, Foynes, County Limerick, Ireland on 10 June 1865. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and trained as an artist at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp under Verlat in 1887; the Académie Julian in Paris and at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London. He subsequently worked as a painter, etcher and engraver He was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin. He also exhibited at the Fine Art Society, New English Art Club, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, New Gallery, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists in London; Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; and Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh; and in the exhibitions of the Arts and Crafts Society of Ireland.
