Sculptor, draughtsman and teacher, born in Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire. Studied at Cardiff College of Art, 1951–6, then after Royal Navy National Service, in 1956–8, was at the Royal College of Art, 1958–61. In 1996 Nicholas won a Major Arts Council Bursary. He was head of foundation studies at Newport College of Art until 1980, then head of school faculty of art at Swansea until 1988. Nicholas was a founder-member of the Welsh Sculpture Trust, was elected a fellow of RBS in 1993 and was sculptor-director of Sculpture at Margam. Group shows included 56 Group, Royal National Eisteddfod and WAC, Sculptors’ Drawings at Sladmore and Pangolin Galleries, both 1994, and Wales Art Fair, Cardiff, 1994 and 1995. He was represented by Compton Cassey Galleries, Withington, and internationally by Poole Fine Art.
