Henk Ngantung (1921–1991) was an Indonesian painter and politician, who on 9th February 1960 was inaugurated to serve as Deputy Governor of Jakarta, alongside Governor Soemarno. He also briefly served as Governor, but his position was debated when he was accused of advocating communist ideology and having close relations with the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI). Ngantung was a self-taught painter who, together with artists and literary figures such as Chairil Anwar and Asrul Sani, co-founded the Indonesian artistic movement 'Gelanggang'. They were interested in the relationship between traditionalism and progress and wanted to explore the evolution of cultural values in the modern world. One of Ngantung's most notable works is the Selamat Datang Monument ('Welcome Statue') he designed which sits outside the Indonesia Hotel, made to celebrate the country hosting the 1962 Olympic Games.
