Painter, draughtsman and printmaker, born in London. He attended Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, 1970–4, gained a first-class honours degree in painting. Won Italian Government Scholarship, 1974–5, then French Government Scholarship, 1977–8. Was a Fellow Commoner in Creative Arts at Cambridge University, 1979–81; gained a Harkness International Fellowship, University of Virginia, visiting scholar, 1981–3; then was a visiting artist at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 1983. Newbolt won an Eastern Arts Purchase Grant then a Materials Grant in early 1980s. Showed at Browse & Darby solo from 1986, other exhibitions including Tatischeff Gallery, New York, from 1988, Belloc Lowndes Gallery, Chicago, 1995, Grosvenor Gallery, 2000, and Innocents, at North House Gallery, Manningtree, in 2004.
