(b Montreal, 10 Aug. 1865; d Tunis, 23 Jan. 1924). Canadian landscape and figure painter, active mainly in Paris, where he settled in 1890. He was friendly with many leading artists, notably Whistler, who was an influence on his early work; later his style became mildly Fauvist. He was widely travelled and made several return visits to Canada, playing an important role in introducing modern trends to his country.
