Artist whose work included large figurative paintings, born in Glasgow, where at the School of Art he graduated with honours in fine art. Awards included a Lautrec Bursary, 1986; National Portrait Award, 1989; Haldane Trust Award, 1990; and Summers Scholarship, 1994. Among McPhail’s group shows were the RSA, 1989; The Discerning Eye, Mall Galleries and Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead, 1990; Bad Blood, Glasgow Print Studio, 1996; and Head, Houldsworth Fine Art, 1999. He had a solo exhibition at the East West Gallery in 1992. Glasgow University, Edinburgh Royal College of Physicians and Robert and Susan Summers hold examples.
