Painter, draughtsman, printmaker and stained glass designer, born in Witton Park, County Durham. He made a unique record of mining and miners, having been conscripted as a Bevin Boy in 1944, working in the industry for 39 years. McGuinness was early encouraged to attend Darlington School of Art, then enlarged his knowledge at the Spennymoor Settlement. He had over 50 solo and 40 group exhibitions, was much-publicised in the media and had work acquired by numerous public and private collections. A 2006 posthumous retrospective at the gallery bearing his name in Bishop Auckland town hall coincided with the publication of a book about him by Robert McManners and Gillian Wales.
