Sculptor, born in Leeds, Yorkshire, who did a foundation course at Harrogate Art College, 1982–3, graduating with honours in fine art from the Polytechnic, Sheffield, where he remained based, 1983–6. Mayne visited libraries and museums for inspiration; his metal sculptures, often welded, drew on sources such as ancient Chinese and Celtic vessels, Egyptian hieroglyphics and Indian miniatures. He won a Prince’s Trust Grant, 1987; Yorkshire Arts Individual Production Award, 1991; and Yorkshire and Humberside Arts Production Award, 1993. As well as group shows, Mayne exhibited solo at Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield, 1994, and Six Chapel Row, Bath, from 1996. Commissions included Yorkshire Sculpture Park, 1988; Landmark Features, Kirklees Way, Dewsbury, 1993; The Earth Centre, Doncaster Council, 1996; and Canal Sculpture, British Waterways, Selby, 1999.
