Artist, born in Harrogate, Yorkshire, who gained a graphic art honours degree at Leeds Metropolitan University, 1991–4. Awards included Young Artist of the Year Award, Harewood House, Leeds, and Abacus Prize for Studentship, Leeds Metropolitan University, both 1995; Small Work Award, MAFA, 1996; Harrogate Borough Council Centenary Project Award, 1997; and in 1998 Most Meritorious Work Award at Holmfirth Open and Laing Landscape Prize, Under 25s, Northern England. Mayes took part in many group shows, including Flying Colours Gallery. Solo exhibitions included Pyramid Gallery, York, and Nightingale Gallery, Leeds, both 1998. Harrogate’s Mercer Art Gallery and Borough Council and several corporate collections hold examples.
