Painter and influential teacher, born in Belfast as H Philip Matthews. After education in the west country Matthews attended Maidenhead School of Art under the landscape painter Bernard Casson, was next at Reading University, then studied with Victor Pasmore and William Coldstream at Euston Road School, 1939. During World War II he was a conscientious objector, working on the land but often distracted by painting and romantic involvements. Matthews’ work of that period shows a strong Coldstream influence; later the colour was richer, the paint thicker, although he remained an artist in the Euston Road tradition. He early made an impression, being included in the 1948 Euston Road School exhibition at Wakefield City Art Gallery and in notable collections such as that of Edward Le Bas.
