Painter in oil and watercolour and photographer, born in Durham. Trained as an engineer, Marr spent World War II in the Royal Air Force, starting to paint in Palestine. In 1947 enrolled at a private art school in London and was introduced to David Bomberg by Dinora Mendelson, Bomberg’s step-daughter, whom he married in 1948. Marr joined Bomberg’s classes at the Borough Polytechnic, was a member of the Borough Group and its secretary, 1948–9. Took part in several Bomberg-related shows, including Spirit in the mass, Fine Art Associates, 1989. Solo exhibitions included Everyman Gallery from 1959; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1965; Maddermarket Theatre Gallery, Norwich, from 1976; Wells Centre, Norfolk, 1981; and Catto Gallery, 1990.
