Son of Belgian émigré sculptor Louis Auguste Malempre (1819-1888), Leo was born in London and trained as an artist, exhibiting portrait and genre subjects regularly at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, London, and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, from the 1880s onwards.
