Lowsey was a mariner and amateur painter. Born in Blything, Suffolk, he was a registered merchant seaman by eighteen and worked as a seaman all his life. By the time of the 1891 census, shortly before his death aged 67, he was listed as a retired mariner and pauper, living in Blything workhouse.
