Artist, designer and teacher, born in Birmingham, son of the painter Frank Taylor Lockwood, Arthur’s wife Gillian and son Paul both being artists. Gained a first-class diploma in book illustration at Birmingham College of Art, 1951–4, becoming an associate of the Royal College of Art, graphic design, 1956–9. Lockwood was a visiting lecturer at Bath Academy of Art, Chelsea and Harrow Schools of Art and Hornsey College of Art. He was a prolific book designer, 1959–87, awards including Times Educational Supplement Information Book Award and Schönste Bücher aus aller Welt, Leipzig, Germany, both 1973. Was art editor, Rathbone Books and Aldus Books, 1959–65; freelanced, 1965–87; and was retained by both Penguin Books and Leicester University Press.
