Painter of vibrantly coloured landscapes, portraits and still life, born in Vienna, Austria, son of the internationally known painter of Jewish life and character Isidor Kaufmann, who gave him his first tuition and took him on extensive travels through Europe. Philipp completed his training with Christian Griepenkerl at the Vienna Academy and with Hermann Strück in Munich, followed by studies in Paris. In Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden Kaufmann encountered influences ranging from the Flemish primitives to the French Impressionists. The rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria prompted Kaufmann’s emigration to England in 1934, where he settled in St John’s Wood and became well-known as a portrayer of distinguished contemporaries.
