Versatile artist and teacher, who between 1978–84 graduated with honours in graphic design at Liverpool Polytechnic faculty of art and design and gained his postgraduate certificate in education. From 1984 he was head of the art department at Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle, Penygroes. Group exhibitions included The Best of British Illustration, Mall Galleries, 1980; Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales, 1989; and The Garrick/Milne Prize, 2003, where his portrait of the actor Tom Courtenay was chosen for exhibition at Christie’s. In 1988, Jones completed an open-air mural on several façades of Zahner, Mahler AG, a painting and decorating firm in Zürich, Switzerland; in 1993, he participated in the Gwerin-y-Graith project at Glynllifon with a big open-air mural; in 1995, Jones was commissioned by Welsh Independent Television to paint a portrait of the playwright W S Jones, later used for publicity during a national tour of his plays; and in 1997, the singer Bryn Terfel sat for a portrait, bought by Gwynedd Council, the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, buying Jones’s portrait of the entertainer Richard Hughes.
