Painter in oil, draughtsman and teacher, born in Bangor, Caernarvonshire, who graduated with honours in fine art from Liverpool Polytechnic, 1979–82; was a civilian photographer/scenes of crime officer in the north Wales police, 1982–9; and gained his teaching certificate at Liverpool Poly, 1989–90. Was art teacher in several Welsh and English schools from 1990, from 1999 at Ysgol Treborth, Bangor, the year he set up a studio in Llandwrog. Jones’s haunting, evocative paintings and drawings of the landscape and north Wales stemmed “from a process of defining, blurring, redefining, adding and subtracting layers until the picture looks complete. This may take anything from a few hours to several months off and on…. Colour and tone are very important.
