Artist, curator and teacher, born in Colwyn Bay, Denbighshire. She studied painting and sculpture under Victor Pasmore, Richard Hamilton and Matt Rugg in the fine art department at King’s College, Durham University, a Diploma in Education at Newcastle University preparing her for teaching. She taught extra-mural life drawing for several years while practising as an artist, but instead of full-time teaching chose to be a curator, notable for innovative, adventurous shows. Johnson was keeper of fine art at Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, then keeper-in-charge of the new Durham Light Infantry Museum and Arts Centre, 1970–89, when arthritis, diagnosed when she was two, forced her to retire. In 1973 she became interested in etching, studying under Chris Penny at Byam Shaw School of Art, practising the craft at Charlotte Press, Newcastle.
