Francis Henry Albrecht Jahn [commonly known as Francis Jahn; also known as Francis Henry Aloysius Jahn] was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England on 17 December 1871. His father, Louis Hartman Adelbert Jahn (1839-1911) was a German-born pottery painter and designer who, in 1893, became Art Director of the Minton factory. Francis Jahn initially worked as a pottery modeller in Stoke-on-Trent and attended Henley School of Art before being awarded a National Scholarship to study at the National Art Training Schools. He subsequently worked as sculptor and teacher of modelling at Hanley School of Art from 1890 to 1906; Middleport School of Art in 1896; Granville School of Art in c.1896; and at Sheffield School of Art from 1906 to 1925. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy in London from 1901 to 1928.
