Landscape painter, draughtsman, teacher and writer, born in Ilkley, Yorkshire. He studied at Leeds College of Art, 1948–52, then Royal College of Art, 1954–8, where he edited Ark magazine, the issue on colour symbolism selling 3,000 copies in three days. From 1959–64 Hyatt was visiting lecturer at Kingston College of Art, then returned to Yorkshire. He was a lecturer at Leeds College of Art, 1964–8, then senior lecturer at Leeds Polytechnic, 1968–84. Hyatt had many solo exhibitions. There was a string from 1960–6 at New Art Centre, others including University of York and Manor House, Ilkley, 1966; Arthur Gallery, Tampa, America, 1967; a series at Goosewell Gallery, Menston, 1969–76; Waddington Gallery, 1975; Waddington and Tooth’s Gallery, 1977; Austin/Desmond Fine Art, 1989; and Dean Clough Contemporary Art Gallery, Halifax, 1991–2.
