Portrait and landscape painter and influential teacher, born in Kirkcaldy, Fife. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art, 1909–12, then in Paris. James Gunn painted Hutchison several times, one a strikingly dandyish portrait as a young man. Hutchison became director of Glasgow School of Art, 1933–43, was elected RSA in 1943, becoming its president seven years later. He was made an Hon. RA in 1950 and was knighted in 1953. Exhibited widely, including RA, RSA, NEAC, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and RBA. He has work in several Scottish collections. Lived for a time in London.
