Painter in oil, watercolour and line artist, Howarth established a reputation as an illustrator of newspapers, periodicals and books. After studying at Sheffield School of Art under A C C Jahn and Oliver Senior in 1910–12, Howarth spent two years at Birmingham School of Art. He exhibited with the Sheffield Society of Artists, at the RSA, in Birmingham and in Wales. Lived at Conway, North Wales.
