Artist in watercolour, oil and pastel, and writer, born in Hillmount, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He became a member of RUA in 1956 and was for a time its president, was president and founder of Ulster Watercolour Society in 1977 and was a member of the Watercolour Society of Ireland. He also showed with RHA, RI and elsewhere and had a series of solo exhibitions in London, Belfast, Dublin and Limerick. After a business career he became a full-time artist from 1968. Haughton was virtually self-taught, although he attended courses by Jack Merriott and Edward Wesson. He aimed “to preserve the pure watercolour technique in the face of many additives that take away from the clarity and sparkle of this medium.” Wrote the books Brush Aside and Purely Watercolour.
