Herbert Hampton was born in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, England in 1862 and studied at Cardiff School of Art in Cardiff, Wales; Lambeth School of Art in London; Westminster School of Art in London; the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London; and at the Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi in Paris. He subsequently worked as a sculptor and stone carver. He exhibited at the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and Royal Academy in London; Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; Manchester City Art Gallery; Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh; Leeds City Art Gallery; Glasgow Institute of the Fine Art; and at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin.
