John Willis Good was born in Edinburgh, the son of John Patten Good (1815–1885), who appears in the 1851 census as a Post Office Surveyor. The 1871 census records John Willis at 18, Gloucester Gardens, Paddington, London, aged 26, unmarried, working as a 'Sculptor'. In the course of a tragically brief yet prolific career, Good exhibited at least one bronze equestrian statuette at the Royal Academy (1874, no. 1597 as 'Hunting statuette: calling hounds out of cover').

He died, aged 34, at 12, The Avenue, Fulham Road, London, on 19th February 1879 and was buried at Brompton Cemetery five days later.
