Sculptor, draughtsman, collagist and teacher, born in Warsop, Nottinghamshire. He studied at Nottingham College of Art, 1934–6, Leicester College of Art, 1936–9, and sculpture at Royal College of Art, 1939–40 and 1946–8, World War II being spent in Royal Air Force Intelligence. He won the Royal College’s Silver Medal in 1947, the Travelling Scholarship in 1949. Godwin became head of sculpture at Hammersmith College of Art, 1957–67, then at Manchester Polytechnic, 1967–82, becoming head of fine arts there, 1979–81. He showed at RA, RBA of which he was a member and Manchester Academy. Carried out many commissions, abstract and figurative; notable works were his sculpture for the centenary of the Manchester Evening News, 1971, work for the Reed Paper Group, British Rail and Commonwealth Institute.
