Painter, illustrator, stage designer, writer and teacher, born in Gullane, East Lothian. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art, 1941–2 and 1947–52, his teachers including William Gillies. Served in Army during World War II in India and Malaya. A postgraduate scholarship and travelling scholarship took him to Majorca. Gage taught at Fettes College until 1968, when he joined the staff of Napier College of Science and Technology, for 20 years from 1958 being a part-time lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art. He was a member of RSW and was president of SSA in 1960–4. Gage also worked as a freelance set designer for Gateway and Citizen’s Theatres in the early 1950s; illustrated for a number of publishers, including Radio Times; was art critic for The Scotsman; and wrote The Eye in the Wind: Contemporary Scottish Painting since 1945, published 1977.
