John Henry Monsell Furse (1860–1950)

John Henry Monsell [also known as John Henry Mensell Furse; and as Harry Furse] was born in Egham, Surrey, England on 6 March 1860 and studied at Trinity College, Oxford and at the Herkomer Art School in Bushey, Hertfordshire. He subsequently worked as a sculptor. Between 1891 and 1909 he exhibited at the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers, New Gallery and Royal Academy in London; Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Leeds City Art Gallery; Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; and at Manchester City Art Gallery. He also participated in the exhibitions of the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society in London in 1893 and 1895. Furse was elected a member of the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society in 1893; the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers in 1899; the Art Workers Guild in 1903; and the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1905.
He married Ethel Dolignon (1856-1887) in 1886 and Evelyn Mary Campbell (1874-1963) in 1922
Furse lived in Bushey Heath, Hertfordshire; London; Netherhampton, Salisbury, Wiltshire; and Torrington, Devon. He died at the family home near Bideford in Devon on 5 April 1950. His brother, Charles Wellington Furse (1868-1904) was a renowned portrait painter.
