Painter whose “main aim is to contemporise the classical figurative genre.” He was born in Heswall, Wirral, Cheshire, studied foundation at Wirral Metropolitan College, Wallasey, and graduated with first-class honours in fine art from De Montfort University, Leicestershire. Furr is a prolific mixed-show exhibitor, including Saatchi Gallery, National Portrait, Francis Kyle and Mall Galleries. He won an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Scholarship, 1991, and Winsor & Newton Young Artist’s Award, ROI, 1993, and his work receives considerable national and specialist press coverage. Had several joint collections and exhibitions including with the Ivory Coast artist Aboudia, the photographer Gered Mankowitz and the neon artist Chris Bracey. He exhibited at Tricycle Gallery in 1993. Solo exhibitions included Duffer of St George, 1993, and Royal Over-Seas League, 1993 and 2001. Aged 28, Furr became the youngest artist to officially paint Queen Elizabeth II, for the Royal Over-Seas League headquarters, after the Queen chose him from a shortlist. There were many other British and overseas private and official commissions, including the Hyde Park and Serpentine painting commission for the Dorchester in 2022, Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor and portraits of two bishops for Westminster Cathedral. Furr was a member of the Chelsea Arts Club and the AGBI. He lives in Thames Ditton, Surrey.
